1984 Tour of the new Cactus Garden

Early into the establishment of the Cactus Garden at SCBG tours were conducted to introduce the public to the great variety of succulent plants.

Graptopetallum paraguayense

Ferocactus latispinus is also called Pochas (referring to the fruits) and comes from Central Mexico.

As with this Trichocereus the most frequent pollinators are bees.

Stapelia gigantea flowers produces a fragrance of decaying flesh which attracts Bottle Flies who subsequently pollinate the flower.  Female flies lay their eggs in the flower but the larvae hatch to find nothing to eat.
